Presentation – Locations Scout in Portugal

Locations Scout in Portugal was created with the mission of mapping and documenting Portugal’s three regions — Madeira, the Azores and mainland Portugal — as cinematic and photographic territories. The project is being built from the ground up: it currently covers Madeira and Porto Santo, with the Azores planned for 2026, followed by mainland Portugal. It is an ambitious path, with its costs and challenges, yet driven by a firm belief in the potential of this country as a natural and cultural stage for storytelling.

In Portugal, geography and climate are synonymous with cinema: in every region, a new scene, a new story, a new possibility. The country’s diversity — landscapes, architecture, and light — offers exceptional conditions for productions of all scales.

This platform speaks to producers, directors, photographers, DPs, production managers, advertising agencies, film commissions, municipalities, rental companies, hotels, and freelance crews — everyone who makes audiovisual production possible.

The purpose of this page is to reveal part of our scouting process — how we document, what kind of surveys we conduct, and how we assess the technical and visual potential of each place. At this stage we present a brief glimpse of the Madeira region — two islands, Madeira and Porto Santo — in the next phase, many more locations will be added. We aim to attract clients and collaborations; full access to the database and documentation will be reserved for registered members and productions. For now, this is the first invitation to consulting and scouting services within these two regions.

Each location presented has been studied on-site — none has proven impossible so far. Feasibility depends on the crew: a 13-member BBC team can film where a 180-person Star Wars unit cannot. All locations have been personally assessed and curated, focusing on framing, light, geology, and spatial nature. The mood boards available on the Canvas platform reflect this aesthetic, technical, and geographical approach.

We invite production companies and institutions to support and join this network, exploring our available services. If you’re looking for other locations or wish to understand how the consulting and scouting services work, you can access them directly below:

Porto Santo Locations

Stretches of golden sand, low dunes and geological landscapes with cliffs define long, clean horizons with soft light. On a compact island where many moves are 4×4, essentials are available locally and specialised gear is routinely sourced from Madeira with lead-time; accommodation options are solid. Weather can switch from brief heavy showers to clear afternoons, and wind is the key element to manage. The climate is mostly dry across the year, with a greener look for a few winter months. Access is straightforward: ferry ~2h30 (scheduled maintenance in January) and regular air links.

  • Look & Feel: golden sand, low dunes, basalt cliffs, long horizons
  • Logistics: compact island, 4×4 access, parking near sets, ferry & air links
  • Light & Weather: soft light, dry climate, windy days, green winter tones

Madeira Locations

Laurissilva forests, high cliffs and fast-changing atmospherics create layered depth and mood. On a steep volcanic island with microclimates, scouting focuses on altitude transitions, vantage roads and weather windows; access is largely by road with tunnels linking the coast. Known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic” — often called the “Hawaii of Europe” — Madeira offers cinematic contrasts within minutes: dense green ridges, volcanic plateaus and sun-lit coastal terraces. A timeless stage for narrative, automotive and tourism campaigns.

  • Look & Feel: laurel forest, cliff roads, cloud seas, terraced slopes
  • Logistics: altitude shifts, narrow roads, tunnel network, controlled stops
  • Light & Weather: fast switches, cloud inversions, backlight windows, microclimates
